Regular Board Meetings

Special Board Meetings

Most Recent Meeting: July 8, 2007
Location: Urban Harvest Market
Meeting called to order at 3:18pm
Minutes: NyteMuse

I. Roll Call
Present: Bob (moderator), Loki, NyteMuse
Absent, proxies given to Bob: Chey, Stef, Phil, Ken
Absent, not responding: Treasure, Alex, Ren

II. Approval of Meeting Minutes
Minutes of last meeting unavailable, so they were not read or voted on

III. Procedural Business: Quorum & Voting Status of Emeritus Members

  • In the past, it was agreed that when it came to the voting status of Emeritus members, their votes would be counted for in person votes, especially when other Board members not present to make up a quorum. For online votes, since there was no obvious reason why active Board members could not participate, Emeritus votes should not be counted. The question raised was whether to change this policy or maintain it.
  • Online votes were defined as those that were called for issues that could not wait until the next quarterly meeting.
  • Suggestions offered were to give Emeritus members partial percentage votes in an online forum, or possibly to consider the votes a replacement when a vote from a Board member was not available, even in online.
  • Clarification was requested by Loki what issues exactly are generally voted on: Procedural issues, dates for classes, membership issues, treasury issues, changing mission, (training DMs to training community)
  • The question was also raised whether or not there should be consequences for Board members who continually miss meetings without prior contact or designating a proxy, but no decision was reached.
  • Motion passed to allow Emeritus members full voting rights in online votes, but those would not count for quorum.
  • Motion also made that, in the case of regular quarterly meetings, a quorum will be comprised of whatever members are present, so long as there are two or more present. (Motion made by Loki, seconded by NyteMuse, passed 7-0) *This is not in effect for emergency meetings.

  • IV. Current Membership
  • Suggested by NyteMuse to institute more clear-cut levels or rankings of the different members, and also formalize the training. Discussion tabled to be taken to eMail list.
  • Question raised by Loki if there are any procedures in place for revoking membership once given, if DMA member acts inappropriately. Since none exists, discussion to be moved to mailing list to discuss proceedings.

  • V. Future Projects/Developments
  • Website: Redesign in progress by NyteMuse
  • Mailing list: Activity needs to increase, more discussions posted to involve members
  • Possible topics: DM hypotheticals (like Treasure used to post), other DM-related discussions, announcements for classes (not just DMA ones), feedback on classes
  • Outreach: More effort needs to be taken to new groups and venues
    • Leathermen's Discussion Group
    • Other local kink-related groups
    • College groups or classes that discuss BDSM or alternate sexuality
    • Flyers could be made to pass out at Folsom and Leather Alley (NyteMuse will look into getting some designs for quarter-sheet ads
  • Suggested that DMA start choosing educators who will be given an endorsement or "stamp of approval". Teachers who agree to mention DMA in their class ads (in the sense of being DMA-Approved/Sanctioned) will be allowed to promote their classes on the list and revamped website in the future.
  • Qualifications for receiving approval: Any current DMA member in good standing, or non-DMA members with Board approval

  • VI. Classes & Training

  • Scheduling of new classes is somewhat hampered by lack of available, qualified teachers. Past requirements for training new teachers has been familiarity with material followed by shadowing of 1 class, but that is not enough.
  • Motion proposed to change requirements to familiarity with material, shadowing of 1 class, and "student teaching" of 1 class, under supervision of experienced teacher, before being allowed to "fly solo" (Proposed by NyteMuse, seconded by Loki, passed 7-0)
  • Date for next DM Traning class tentatively scheduled for Sunday, July 29th, depending on location availability. Loki will check with Carol to see about reserving Center for Sex & Culture.
  • Tentatively proposed that, due to last-minute success having class at Fantasy Makers in East Bay, DM class locations should rotate on a regular basis between San Francisco, East Bay, and South Bay. Loki and NyteMuse will investigate possible locations in the areas that would be willing to host.
  • Also suggested that, in order to increase number of advance RSVPs and decrease walk-ins, class price should be increased for walk-ins (advance RSVPs or pre-registration cost would stay $20, but walk-ins would be charged $25)

  • Next Board Meeting: Sunday, October 21, 2007, 3pm-5pm at Urban Harvest
    Meeting adjourned at 4:55pm
